I am a refugee/of asylum status, can I book OET?

Quick Read

  • You can use an official immigration document issued by your host country, recognising your immigration status that includes your full name, date of birth and photograph in place of a passport or national ID.
  • You can also use an official immigration document with no photo ID issued by the host country together with an authorisation letter.
  • For more information see 4.4 OET Test Regulations.

If you are a refugee or are of asylum status and you do not hold a valid passport or government issued national ID for the country in which you are attending the test, you can book OET using:

  • Official immigration documents that recognise your status and contain your full name, date of birth (DoB), and photograph.
  • If your immigration identification does not have a photograph, full name, DoB, or is pending approval, you can use this together with an authorisation letter
    • The authorisation request must be submitted no later than two days after booking. You must bring the authorisation letter and the identification used on test day. For more information please see the FAQ 'How do I request an authorisation letter?'.

Conditions

For candidates taking the test in the UK

Refugee or asylum status (or pending status) candidates that hold a valid national/government issued identification bearing your full name, photograph and DoB will be able to book and sit the OET. This may include one of the following:

  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
  • Application Registration Card (ARC)
  • UK Home Office travel document (i.e. Convention travel document) issued by the UK Home Office.

If you do not have the above you will be required to submit an authorisation request form within two days of booking so that an authorisation letter can be issued in advance of the OET.

You can use your government issued identification together with an authorisation letter as verification.

For candidates taking the test in the US

OET recognises all refugee and asylum status documentation issued by US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Accepted documents may include: Employment Authorization Document - EAD

Candidates can use their government-issued identification as verification for the booking and test day check-in process.

Candidates who do not have any form of ID which has their full name, DoB, and photo will be required to submit an Authorisation request form within 48 hours of booking so an authorisation letter can be issued in advance of the OET.
